What Types of Paint Premier Painters Hawaii Recommends?

Usama Ijaz • December 28, 2021

The paint industry has progressed significantly since the original paints were made from clay, berries, and flowers and were bound with animal fat, milk, and eggs. There are now cleaner binders, a range of treatments, and virtually limitless color options.

With so many options for paint, understanding the various kinds of paint is critical to choosing the best pick. Aside from paint types, you should also consider the average paint cost in your budget and if you would like to work with a painting contractor like Premier Painters Hawaii.

Painting professionals weigh in and discuss the various kinds of paint available. They specify which paint should be used in which rooms. This comprehensive painting guideline will ensure that your task is done correctly by recommending types of paint perfect for your space.

Paint Types by Base

Oil-Based Paint

Premier Painters Hawaii commonly use oil-based paints for their hard finish, which keeps them lasting and water-resistant. Oil-based paints have superior surface penetration and adherence than other paints.

Oil-based paints are excellent at stain blocking, making them an excellent option for stained surfaces, bleeding woods, and rust-prone metals. On the other hand, their drying period is much slower than latex paints, often lasting up to 24 hours.

Water-Based Paint

When painting an inner wall, water-based enamel is usually a better choice when painting an inner wall than oil-based enamel.

Water-based paints have a lower odor and are simpler to clean up (something you'll love if you're painting inside your home!). Furthermore, water-based paints have low VOCs, dry easily, and wear better over time.

Latex-Based Paint

For the majority of different uses, latex paint is employed. The advantage of using this paint over oil-based paint is that it is considerably easier to work with. It's easy to implement, dries fast, and doesn't make as much of a mess because it's water-based.

It is also resistant to the damaging effects of direct sunshine. Latex paint stretches and contracts with the home siding and does not trap moisture. Acrylic latex is the highest quality latex paint suitable for any building material, including stone and metal (as long as the surface is primed properly).

If you decide to use latex paint, make sure it is designed for outdoor use. The latex paint you use on the inside of your walls will not last outdoors.

Primer

Primers can also be oil or water-based. Water-based primers are excellent for almost any project, but they can only be used with water-based paint. Oil-based primers can be used with either oil-based or water-based paint, and they perform well on pigmented wood, bleeding wood, and steel.

Paint Sheen Options

things to know for exterior painting in Hawaii

Flat Paint

If you're going to paint your kitchen, bathroom, or children's rooms, skip the flat finish. Why? It's not very effective in cleaning. If you want dirty fingerprints, grease splatters, and other messes to disappear, you'll have to paint over them.

The flat finish, on the other hand, is refined and sumptuous. It's ideal for interior walls (that won't be handled much) and roofs. It's also a fantastic option if you have visible surface imperfections because it generates a low-reflecting surface, which reduces the look of faults.

Matte Paint

Matte paint has slightly more gloss than smooth paint. When discussing paint types, individuals frequently use matte and flat interchangeably. This isn't entirely correct because there are subtle distinctions between matte and flat finishes.

Aside from having a more glossy appearance than a flat paint, matte paint is also more lasting. When looking for paint in a high-traffic location, the modest increase in stability makes matte paint a more acceptable alternative. It's still not the best option for most people, but it will hold up better than flat paint. This type of paint should have a wide range of applications in your house.

Using matte paint on your ceiling is a fantastic choice. This is a terrific way to save money, and matte paint will be better than other varieties in several aspects.

For example, when you use matte paint, you can more easily conceal affected parts of your ceiling or minor faults. If you want to save budget while still getting the most out of your matte paint, this is something to think about.

Eggshell Paint

Because eggshell has a low luster (think of the matte sheen of an actual eggshell), it is ideal for ornamental treatments. It is easier to wash than a smooth finish. This paint is long-lasting and will not wash away when you wash your walls. Some less expensive paints might not withstand cleaning.

Satin Paint

Satin has a shine that creates a soft and velvety appearance. It's also easy to wash. While you can wipe it, you cannot scrub it vigorously. Satin can be used in hallways, doors, woodwork, bedrooms, and dining rooms.

Semi-Gloss Paint

Semi-gloss gives your place a subtle sheen. It's a wonderful option for damp places like bathrooms and kitchens since it can withstand scrubbing. However, be cautious because a semi-gloss surface may emphasize flaws in the wall.

Semi-gloss is also suitable for use on doors, baseboards, and trim. Trim work is an ideal place to use Semi-Gloss. Because semi-gloss dries incredibly hard, it's also excellent for beaten-up woodwork.

Gloss Paint

High-gloss is lustrous, stain-resistant, and easily scrubbable. It is ideal for wood surfaces such as trim, doors, and cabinets. You can also use it in bathrooms and kitchens (particularly for the backsplash) because it is easy to clean meal spills and fingerprints off of this surface.

It's also an excellent material for fences and railings. High-gloss paint, as bright paint, reflects light, making defects extra visible. Hence Premier Painters Hawaii doesn’t suggest it for walls!
